Consumer Culture
by coramdeo on Apr.02, 2009, under Blog
As I think more about work and our culture, the more I feel something isn’t right. There is an uneasiness that sits with me like a nagging friend who’s very words are draining to the soul. I am weary. I am tired. I am weary of this consumerism inside of me and all around me and I am tired of being marketed to. I want to live my life without the unwanted intrusion of ads. What I find so funny is that we have created the technical age where consumers can research products themselves and make their own choices based on their criteria, and yet advertisers shove their ads down our throats. When will the ads catch up to the new technology, and I do not mean the Internet.
What I invision is a world of ads where people are only advertised to when they want to be and only for the product types that they are interested in. Perhaps this is just a pipe dream, or a future reality. I know from the consumer side that my life will be much more improved without all the unwanted ads. Look when I want advertising is when I am looking for a new product, or I am hungry looking for food, otherwise I do not want to be advertised to, not when I am driving, not when I am watching t.v, not when I am on the internet, not when I am listening to the radio, and not when I am sleeping (yes ads plague my sleep at times).
